Meet Our Staff
Karen J. Penfold
Karen was the Executive Director of eWomenNetwork a women’s business organization, in Elk Grove and Stockton from 2006-2012 helping women small business owners and entrepreneurs. A two-time breast cancer survivor since November of 2009, Karen joined the Albie Aware Board of Directors in 2011. In 2012 Karen campaigned for Survivor of the Year, winning the title after raising $25,000. In 2013 Karen volunteered as the Mammography Clinic Coordinator. In January, 2014 Karen was hired as the Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director where she serves performing administrative duties as well as program coordination.

Kahn Soares & Conway, LLP
Ann M. Grottveit joined the Albie Aware Board in 2014. She is an attorney at Kahn Soares & Conway, LLP where she is responsible for the litigation practice of the Sacramento office including commercial litigation, regulatory practice with several key state agencies on both policy and enforcement matters as well as handling environmental litigation. She represents several state agricultural commissions as their general counsel handling corporate, employment and compliance areas. She also represents and advises many nonprofit entities.

Dave is a business owner and life-long car-lover with more than 20 years experience in various facets of the automotive industry. Owner of G & R Body and Paint since 2000, Dave joined the board of the California Autobody Association where he served as President in 2012 and 2013. In 2008, he joined the board of Albie Aware and currently serves as Board Chairman and recently accepted an additional two year chair position.
Mary Walters, CPA
McGovern, Planesi & Walters, LLP, CPAs
A graduate of Chico State University, Mary worked her way up to partner/shareholder of a top 25 accounting firm in Sacramento before she was 30 years old. In the fall of 2004, Mary, along with her twin sister, Sheila McGovern and another shareholder, Robert Planesi, formed their own accounting firm, McGovern, Planesi & Walters, LLP (MPW). In 2011 they restored a historical Victorian building in Elk Grove and moved their accounting firm to Elk Grove . Mary has been a board member and the treasurer of Albie Aware since 2006.
Former Administrative Director, Northern California PET Imaging Center (Retired)
A Board Member since 2007 and Board Chair from 2009-2012, Jan recently retired from being the Administrative Director at Northern California PET Imaging Center in Sacramento where she was involved in all aspects of operations, marketing and business development from 2011 to April 2018. Her educational background and experience includes Healthcare Administration, Nuclear Medicine Technologist and Radiology Technologist.

Chris Joined the Albie Aware Board of Directors in 2016. Chris began his association with Albie Aware as the founder and event organizer of the Albie Swingin’ for Life Breast Cancer Baseball Showcase in 2009, which has raised over $94,000 for Albie Aware. Chris is the Director of Corporate Sponsorships for the California Interscholastic Federation, where he is responsible for state-wide partnerships, marketing and television rights for the governing body of high school athletics in California.
Angela Elpers Barnes
VP, Perry Communications
Angela Elpers Barnes joined the Albie Aware Board in 2018. The mission of Albie Aware resonated with Angela, as she is the daughter of a 20+ year breast cancer survivor, and close friend of several other women who have battled the disease. Angela has seen first-hand the challenges cancer patients face, and the toll it takes on families. Her personal experiences inspired her to support Albie Aware, working to ensure others receive the care they need and don’t walk alone in their cancer journey. Angela is an attorney who currently serves as a Vice President at Perry Communications Group, a full-service strategic communications firm specializing in public relations and public affairs.
Interim Executive Director
Carrie has been on the Albie Aware Board since 2016. She is a graduate of Boise State University and St. Mary’s College of California. She spent the first 15 years of her career in Healthcare Management as a Special Procedures Technologist and manager ( MRI, CT and Angiograms). She then changed her career focus where she spent 17 years in nonprofit management with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The Make-A-Wish Foundation and WEAVE. She also worked as a consultant for The Sacramento City College Foundation. Currently, a Certified Life Coach with a specialty in Health and Wellness, working with individuals to create achievable wellness plans and goals for a healthy lifestyle.
Doug attended Santa Clara University on a baseball scholarship and later played in the minor league until injury ended his baseball career. Doug and his wife Albie raised their family in Sacramento with Albie in Real Estate and Doug with his own promotional marketing company. After the death of Albie from breast cancer in 2002, Doug founded Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation

Dignity Health Cancer Institute of Greater Sacramento
Ann was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from UC Berkeley and later received a BS in Nursing from Montana State University. Passionate about oncology nursing, Ann is presently an Oncology Nurse Navigator for Dignity Health. Being a patient advocate and central point of contact for patients as they journey through a complicated health system with their overwhelming cancer diagnosis has been one of the most rewarding jobs of her career. Ann served on the Albie Aware Board Directors for four years and now serves on the Medical Advisory Board.
Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento
Claudia De Young, MD, is a board certified internist at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center. She works in the Center for Breast Health and the Breast Cancer Survivorship Program. In addition to evaluating a variety of breast complaints, she also sees and follows high risk women including BRCA gene mutation carriers. She has been with Kaiser Permanente since 2003. In addition to her clinical duties, she is the “Mammogram Champion” for the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center as well as being in charge of several breast cancer-related support programs including the Breast Cancer Peer Navigator Program and a monthly breast cancer workshop. Dr. De Young feels passionately about her work and gives community talks on various women’s health topics on a regular basis.

Joelle Jakobsen, MD, i s a board certified Surgeon with Mercy Medical Group. She graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1996 and she completed her residency at Orlando Regional Healthcare.

Sutter Medical Group
Melissa Williams, M.D. graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School with honors in 2001. She is a board certified medical oncologist with over 15 years of diverse experiences, specializing in Hematology/Oncology. She has particular interest in prevention and management strategies for women at high risk for developing breast cancer. Dr. Williams is affiliated with Sutter Medical Group in Sacramento and Davis.
